The South China Public Library, established in 1830, is the oldest continuously operating library in the State of Maine. The library is located in the village of South China, near the shore of China Lake.


The Library is a volunteer organization and offers regular hours, volunteer opportunities, children’s programs, a book club, large print book collection, audiobooks on tape and CD, one public computer with internet access, and free wireless internet access for laptop users.

We provide services and programs for community members of all ages, including summer residents. We encourage a love of reading and learning by offering a diverse and balanced collection with special strengths in local history and books by Maine authors.

In March 2012 the South China Library marked 100 years as a Maine nonprofit corporation. The Library was recognized at a special ceremony held at the library. We look forward to the next 100 years.

1830   The South China Library was established, located in a home.


1900   The current library building was completed.


1912   South China Public Library Association was incorporated.


1980   The Children’s Room was added.
